Welcome to Capitol Hill United Methodist Church! My name is David Weekley and I moved to Capitol Hill to serve as pastor on July 1, 2010. This year Capitol Hill celebrates one hundred years of Christian discipleship and outreach in the Wesleyan tradition. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, modeled and taught a faith balanced in personal devotion and public witness. Early Methodists in England established hospitals, created and taught first-aid classes, educated the poor, took food to the hungry, collected clothing, and visited those in prison, among other forms of outreach. Methodism in the United States took on similar means of expression. A classic adage of John Wesley, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, to as many as you can, for as long as you can,” remains a key ideal among United Methodists today
Continuing this history into our twenty-first century world in a meaningful and faithful way is our goal at Capitol Hill UMC. Our mission statement reads: “The mission of Capitol Hill UnitedMethodist Church is to be a caring congregation with God and the teachings of Jesus Christ, to serve the church, the community, and the world.” We are working together in developing ministries that reflect our mission and values, and invite you to join us.
The motto of The United Methodist Church, “Open hearts, open minds, open doors” is a value we aspire to live and practice daily, both as a congregation and as individuals. We cherish and celebrate diversity, and appreciate the gifts, talents, perspective, creativity and unique personality each individual brings to our community. In Alice Walker’s The Color Purple the character Shug at one point says, “Celie, tell the truth, have you ever found God in church? I never did, I just found a bunch of folks hoping God will show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did, too. They come to church to share God, not find God.” At Capitol Hill UMC we gather every Sunday at 11:00a.m. to share God, and to receive strength for our journey as followers of Jesus. Please join us!
