VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The numbers of individuals requiring food support from Neighborhood House has increased in the past five years from approximately 3000 to 8000 people per year. This has stretched the fiscal and volunteer resources of Neighborhood House. Because of this Capitol Hill and our sister church Sellwood, have established a partnership with the Neighborhood House food distribution program. Neighborhood House employees and volunteers pick up groceries from the food bank each Tuesday. On the third Tuesday of the month from 6pm until 8pm Capitol Hill and Sellwood volunteers unpack and shelve the food. We also check for expiry dates, compost the outdated food and recycle the packaging. Capitol Hill Church also collects money for Neighborhood House on a weekly basis in our Neighborhood House moneybox, which was decorated by children of the church. Each dollar collected buys five pounds of food. As of January 23rd 2012, we have collected $575, or the equivalent of 2875 pounds of food. If you would like to join our Tuesday group, we would love to have you. Also, the first Tuesday is family night at Neighborhood House, when all members of the community are welcome to come and unpack groceries.
